August 26, 2020, 11:00 pm –
2:00 pm

While CSG East and the state of New Hampshire could not host an in-person Annual Meeting this year due to the pandemic, we are pleased to offer a summer Weekly Webinar Series with nationally recognized speakers throughout the month of August. You will have to register for each webinar separately, and registration is free!

The CSG East staff is committed to offering you access to national thought leaders on topics of critical interest to policy makers in the CSG Eastern region, and the thought-provoking programming you have come to expect at a typical CSG East Annual Meeting. And, if you haven’t been to an Annual Meeting, these webinars will be a great introduction to CSG East.

August 12, 1:00 pm: Leana Wen, an emergency physician and Visiting Professor of Health Policy and Management at the George Washington University’s Milken School of Public Health led a discussion on Healthcare After the Pandemic. Dr. Wen is an expert in public health preparedness and previously served as Baltimore’s Health Commissioner.  She is a contributing columnist for The Washington Post, author of the book When Doctors Don’t Listen, and a frequent guest commentator on the COVID-19 crisis. Lisa Simpson, President and Chief Executive Officer of AcademyHealth, and a nationally recognized health policy researcher and pediatrician, moderated the discussion.

August 18, 3:00 pm: The second webinar was Race, Racism, and the Law. Richard Rothstein, the author of The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America discussed the historic role of government in shaping structural and systemic racism in public policy, and the ways in which state governments should enact and enforce meaningful legislation to address equity in education, health, housing, environment, and policing. He is also a distinguished fellow of the Economic Policy Institute, a fellow of the Thurgood Marshall Institute of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and of the Haas Institute at the University of California (Berkeley). The program was moderated by Charles Ellison, veteran strategist, host of WURD Radio Reality Check, and senior fellow with CSG East. This session was rebroadcasted on Wednesday, August 19 at 2:00 pm.

August 19, at 3:00 pm: The third webinar was Global Protest: The Movement Shaking The World in the Wake of George Floyd. In a dynamic keynote plenary session, political scientists Christina Greer and Khalilah Brown-Dean explored a global Black Lives Matter movement erupting across three continents following the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, and the social, economic, public health, and political context around it. They discussed their books Black Ethnics by Greer and Identity Politics in the United States, by Brown-Dean. Both explored the causes and effects of anti-Black policing, how needed reforms are challenged by the current political climate, and offered an examination of racism in government policies as discussed in Richard Rothstein‘s book The Color of Law. Veteran strategist Charles Ellison, host of WURD’s Reality Check and senior fellow with CSG East will moderate.
